Wartsila Imabari LNG Carriers Project Abstract

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has signed shipbuilding contracts for two LNG carriers to be built at Saijo Shipyard in 2017 and delivered to the Spanish shipping company Elcano for their use by the Spanish gas operator Gas Natural. Larger than the standard 154,000m3 design, the 178,000m3 vessels will be able to transit the expanded Panama Canal once it is complete. With twin engines, propellers and rudders, and an optimized hull form, Imabari states that the carriers will have improved fuel consumption of 40 percent over a standard steam turbine vessel. Within this project Norwegian company Wartsila Oil & Gas Systems AS awarded Burckhardt Compression a contract to supply four Laby®-GI reciprocating compressors.
